Children need love, kindness, understanding and faith. That can and should offer a family. But what happens, if there is no family or if the family is not capable to accompany the growing and becoming of the children?
A long-standing friendship with a Bulgarian lead to my decision in 1997 to help children in Bulgaria, first I started doing it privately and then later with the incorporated society. I choose Bulgaria because this inconspicuous country has an extremely high number of children that depend on education in a children's home. I had the dream, that I could at least help some of them. I wanted that they could grow up in houses that are designed according to their needs, houses that allow them to live almost like within a family.
The longstanding practice in my educational job has approved over and over again, that such an environment belongs to the basic conditions that influence the children during their childhood and that are very beneficial for their personality. With the construction of the children's home "Maria Louisa", our incorporated society has proven, that such dreams can come true! And that has made me really happy!

As a journalist, I came across terrible conditions in children's homes and orphanages mainly in East Europe again and again. But I left my position as a correspondent not until winter 1996/1997 when I had to witness during my journey across Bulgaria that there - unlike Romania- the conditions had not improved but had permanently gone worse despite the political shift. Thousands of Bulgarians died of starvation during this winter.
That my friends and I succeeded to save the life of 100 children back then and to offer to more than 150 children today a new home and a perspective for the future makes me - being myself father of three children - proud and happy. All the more since Bulgaria still is the country with the highest rate of children brought up in an institution in Europe - a quiet catastrophe, unfortunately ongoing and still noticed by only a few - in the middle of a country of the European Union.

Short after the political opening of Eastern Europe, the news about the situation for orphans in those countries shook me. When I heard years later, that Bulgaria is the land with the highest number of children in children's homes, I wanted to get involved. I searched for a small organisation that plans and conducts determinedly concrete aid projects.
So I came to the society, that back then already had built two houses and had planed a professional training centre. When I saw for myself the new living conditions and the merry exuberance of the children during a journey to Bulgaria, I made my decision. I was glad to contribute to such a sustainable project that has a future.

I grew up in Bulgaria. I had a carefree and happy childhood. I wanted to give some of that back. Two moments have always shaken me a lot - the happiness in the eyes of the children, whom we could offer a new home and the dedication of my friends in the board of the incorporated society.
Although the work for the benefit of children takes a lot of time, in view of the generous willingness of many sponsoring families and donors to support us energetically and financially, I can't help but go on.
